There are currently four major challenges in the development of agriculture and rural areas.
Firstly, the post harvest losses of agricultural products are too severe, directly reducing income. Nowadays, with the improvement of agricultural technology, it is no longer a problem to harvest abundant grains and vegetables. The first challenge faced by agricultural development is the significant losses caused during the harvesting process of agricultural products. According to data statistics, China's agricultural products suffer from decay and deterioration due to outdated storage and preservation techniques after harvesting, resulting in annual losses of up to 300 billion yuan. For example, many vegetables harvested by farmers suffer losses due to outdated storage methods.
Secondly, farmers do not understand adjusting the planting and breeding structure according to market changes. In the entire market, most participants have a herd mentality, and I will plant whatever others plant. As a result, current agriculture is mainly focused on grain, with low economic benefits. Most farmers are afraid to boldly try innovation and find it difficult to break through in the industry.
Thirdly, the agricultural product processing industry is backward. For rural farmers, most of their agricultural products are sold in the harvest state, almost without processing, so the farmers earn the lowest price. The value-added portion of agricultural products has been seized by intermediaries. The problem lies in the backwardness or even lack of processing industry in the vast rural agricultural product processing industry.
Fourthly, the agricultural product sales service system is backward. Agriculture has almost a bumper harvest every year, and agricultural products are also increasing year by year. However, farmers still do not make money. The fundamental problem is that agricultural products cannot be sold, and even if sold, they will be sold at a low price. Therefore, farmers cannot make money, let alone become rich. The problem lies in the backwardness of the sales service system for agricultural products, the lack of a comprehensive agricultural product production and sales coordination system, and the difficulty of selling agricultural products relying on the ability of farmers.
